When Energy Becomes Form

This book marks the conclusion of the AA School’s Beyond Entropy research cluster. The theme of the book derives from the urgency with which the notion of energy has been raised in recent years in political, economic and scientific debates. The book charts the efforts of architects to reappropriate this theme and to address the debate in a wider cultural sphere.

When Prototypes Become Space

Beyond Entropy: When Prototypes Become Space, published alongside the 2012 Milan Triennale exhibition, concludes the research initiated in the first exhibition and publication. The book examines how energy, entropy, and form shift from abstract prototypes into spatial categories, inviting us to understand architecture as a practice of theorizing and generating new territorial and spatial possibilities.

The initial prototypes gradually evolved into five architectural rules, each subverting one of the conventions through which architecture is traditionally conceived: brief, scale, structure, representation, and form. Together, they establish an operative method for engaging with change and the conditions already present within a territory.

Together, the five rules reverse conventional architectural assumptions:
Brief does not prescribe; it opens possibilities.
Scale does not measure; it connects.
Structure does not resist; it embraces change.
Representation does not freeze; it registers time.
Form does not impose; it reveals.

When Prototypes Become Space therefore marks the transition of the prototypes into architectural agencies.

Stefano Rabolli Pansera’s text on two parallel projects in Angola and Sardinia, unpacking Beyond Entropy’s three key concepts: entropy, form, and energy.

Focus II

Focus II is a publication composed of a series of photographs of the posters that Steve Bishop spread in Calasetta during his residency in March 2013. The three posters are the fragments of a larger picture of a boat engine that was assembled in MiArt, Art Fair in Milan.

Luanda Encyclopedic

Stacks of twenty-three posters, from the series ‘Found Not Taken’ 2009-2013 by the Angolan artist Edson Chagas constitute the publication of Beyond Entropy in Palazzo Cini on the occasion of the Angola Pavilion at the 55th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia.
The visitor can choose to take one, a few, or all the images of Luanda captured by Chagas thus pushing the exhibition out of the museum’s walls and inhabiting the streets of Venice

Potential Monuments of Unrealised Futures

This publication has been edited in occasion of the 14. International Architecture Exhibition la Biennale di Venezia, to follow the same thematic of the exhibition.‘Potential Monuments of Unrealised Futures’ (Pavilion of the Republic of Albania). Edited by Beyond Entropy Balkans (Stefano Rabolli Pansera and Jonida Turani).

Ilha de Sao Jorge

The publication Ilha de São Jorge, co-edited with Paula Nascimento, Ana Vaz Milheiro, and Stefano Serventi, gathers the research developed on the Azorean island into a study of
Lusophone modernism at its most peripheral edges. Structured around essays, archival material, and new photographic documentation, the book resists the idea of a unified “Portuguese-speaking” architectural tradition, tracing a set of divergent adaptations of concrete, climate, and colonial inheritance across Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and the Azores themselves. As with the Beyond Entropy volumes, the publication functions less as documentation of a finished project than as an argument in its own right: that architecture’s history is best read not from its capitals, but from its islands.
